Details

Project TitleFamily Impact of Assistive Technology Scale for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (FIATS-AAC)
Track CodeHBK 2015-004
Short Description

The Family Impact of Assistive Technology Scale for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (FIATS-AAC) is a sound, parent-report questionnaire designed to detect the functional effects of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions on the lives of children and youth, ages 3 to 18 years, and their families. Parents read each item and indicate their degree of agreement using a 7-point Likert scale. The 89 items are assigned to one of 13 dimensions to measure both the overall and domain-specific impacts of AAC system use. The domains include seven child-related factors (behaviour, communication, contentment, doing activities, education, self-reliance, social versatility) and six parent- and family-related factors (caregiver relief, energy, family roles, finances, security, supervision). A clinical scoring workbook (Excel) automates calculations for total scale and subscale scores and change scores. The workbook also generates an outcomes report for clinical purposes. The FIATS-AAC manual describes the properties of the questionnaire and provides administration and scoring guidelines for clinical, program evaluation, and research applications.

Abstract

The FIATS-AAC questionnaire is available in English. The French version (available upon request) is forward translated, but not linguistically validated.
