Short Description

The invention is a novel method for automated fit customization and manufacturing of passive-dynamic ankle-foot orthoses (PD-AFOs). This method establishes a technique to digitally capture and use the size and shape of an individual’s shank and foot to drive the customization of a PD-AFO model and then rapidly manufacture the resulting customized PD-AFO.

Benefits

Current passive-dynamic ankle-foot orthoses (PD-AFOs) are either generically manufactured, having standardized size and shape, or are manually fabricated, causing substantial time and cost constraints. Both manufacturing methods lack the ability to precisely control PD-AFO characteristics to meet an individual needs. This technology has the ability to: 1) rapidly design and manufacture PD-AFOs and 2) customize PD-AFOs with excellent precision.
