Track CodeP1516
Websitehttp://musc.technologypublisher.com/technology/17501
Short Description

The invention is a disposable urine collection system comprising a plastic liner releasably mounted to a toilet bowl, rim, or seat, with a basin in the center for urine. The basin has a stopped port to drain the urine into any specimen container. The product is designed to interface with a variety of toilet sizes, ranging from a toddler potty or a full-sized toilet. This urine collection system is intended to facilitate more hygienic urine specimen collection than current methods. It is particularly advantageous for populations such as children, the elderly, and hospitalized patients for whom voiding while holding a cup can be challenging or impossible. This new device will facilitate more effective, hygienic specimen collection and will drastically lower the challenges of urine collection.

Abstract

Overview: Urinalysis is performed as a part of most routine medical examinations, including pregnancy checkups and drug screening, and is necessary for the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as urinary tract infection, kidney and bladder disease, and back or abdominal pain, among others. The clean catch method of sample collection is frequently used to avoid contamination, however this method is difficult for most to complete hygienically. If a patient requires assistance while holding the specimen container, the process can be unsanitary, embarrassing, and time consuming. If this process is extremely difficult for the patient, the physician may resort to catheterizing the patient. Current devices that attach to the toilet have limitations such as not being disposable or not being configured to mate with a specific specimen container. Additionally, these attachable devices are not able to fit a range of toilet sizes.

Applications: Any and all applications for urine collection for urinalysis
Advantages: Disposable; works with various specimen containers; can fit to a toddler size potty or a full sized toilet; hands-free urine collection; facilitates hygienic specimen collection; ease of use for small children, elderly population, or anyone who is challenged with current urine collection methods
Key Words: Urine collection, specimen, urinalysis, toilet
